Winter Narrative
Winter break is a time of bountiful feasting, good feeling, and leisure, however, with all good things come challenges and hardships along the way. My mother and I travelled up to Livermore on the 23rd. We were headed to my grandparent’s house. Shortly behind us was the rest of my family coming from Pueblo and Fort Collins.
This would be the families first Christmas without my Grandmother. I knew that it would be difficult to have a jolly Christmas in the midst of grieving. A portion of my family wanted to skip Christmas this year, but I would not hear of it.
For the first time, we could not rely on my grandmother preparing the food. We all took on our roles to overcome the unheard-of challenge. Food, in my family, makes the holiday a special event.
After everything was prepared and Christmas Day arrived, it was time to get my feast on. I relished myself in ham, rolls, corn, and other savory foods. Even though my cousin did a poor job of mashing the potatoes, I was extremely satisfied with our banquet. For some unexplainable reason, food tastes better at my grandparents house. I could not stop eating. My stomach was soon over-stuffed and ached from over-consumption.
After everyone had eaten more than their fill, it was deemed time to play games. We all got together in the living room and played a myriad of games. The highlight of evening was unquestionably Pictionary. All of us divided into two teams and engaged in the game of wits and drawing. I was painfully reminded that my family is a bunch of artists, and I have yet to master the stick figure. Regardless of my incapability of drawing, it was still a great time.
Following Christmas Day, I had to drive back down to Roosevelt High School early in the morning for wrestling practice. Upon arrival, I saw I was over my target weight by a hefty amount. I knew I would have to work extra hard considering I ate without limitations.
Thanks to my family, I had a lot of fun during winter break. Everyone was able to honor and celebrate my late grandmother whom we all missed greatly. The games were fun and the food was first-rate. I take pride in the fact that few families are like mine. My family can come together with joy, love, and laughter. There is no such thing as a feud or confrontation at “Grammy’s House”, such a thing is simply inexistent. I never imagined that such horrid conditions could lead to such a great holiday. With her passing, my grandmother left behind an immortal legacy that will continue through generations.
